CloudNC, a London-headquartered company applying artificial intelligence to precision computer-controlled machining, has raised $20 million to push its software into more workshops and launch a new product aimed at the quoting bottleneck that precedes every manufacturing job. The funding round was led by Nimble Ventures, a US venture investor, with participation from Calculus Venture Capital, Entrepreneur First and LM Ventures, the corporate venture arm of defense giant Lockheed Martin.

The investment marks another step for a company that has positioned itself at the intersection of industrial software, artificial intelligence and the broader push to bring manufacturing back to Western shores. CloudNC, which also operates its own factory in Chelmsford, Essex, will use the capital to expand commercially in existing and new markets, while continuing to build out a product line that has grown from a single programming tool into a broader suite aimed at eliminating two of the most persistent inefficiencies in machine shops.

The problem of CNC programming

CloudNC's first product, CAM Assist, targets the slowest step in computer-controlled machining. When a manufacturer receives a part design, it must be translated into a machining strategy and a set of toolpaths that guide the cutting tools. This is skilled, repetitive work that can take a programmer hours to complete. For many shops, it is a hidden bottleneck: machines can sit idle, waiting for programs that must be manually generated and verified.

CAM Assist automates this programming process, generating machine-readable toolpaths that a machinist can approve, adjust and refine. The software does not eliminate the need for human expertise; rather, it accelerates the tedious parts of the job so that skilled workers can focus on the highest-value decisions. More than 1,000 machine shops now use the software, several hundred of which are based in the United States. That adoption has given CloudNC a foothold in an industry that has historically been slow to embrace new technology.

Precision machining is an industry characterized by tiny tolerances, complex geometries and expensive raw materials. Getting a program wrong can ruin a part, waste hours of machine time and cost tens of thousands of dollars. That is why machinists have traditionally been skeptical of automation software. CloudNC has addressed that skepticism by making CAM Assist a tool of assistance rather than replacement. The system generates a complete strategy that the machinist can inspect and adjust before any metal is cut, giving the human final control while removing the drudgery of point-to-point programming.

A second product focused on quoting

The new product, named Quote Agent, is due later this year and targets a different constraint. Before a machine shop can machine anything, it must assess an incoming enquiry and price the work. This manual process determines whether the job is won at all, and it is a high-stakes activity that balances speed against accuracy. Quote too slowly and the opportunity is lost to a competitor. Quote too generously and the shop may win the work only to discover that it cannot make a margin once production begins.

CloudNC's chief executive and co-founder, Theo Saville, described quoting as one of the biggest hidden bottlenecks in precision machining. "Move too slowly and shops can lose the opportunity, or price inaccurately and they can lose margin once the job reaches production," Saville said in a statement accompanying the funding announcement.

The choice of quoting as a second product is strategically shrewd. Programming software sells to the workshop floor, where engineers and machinists feel the pain of manual programming every day. Quoting software, by contrast, sells to whoever owns the margin — typically the business owner or general manager. It produces a number that can be checked against the customer's own experience within weeks, making its value easier to measure than a productivity gain inside the programming department.

Quote Agent also puts CloudNC in front of a buyer who may never have thought about CAM software at all. A shop owner who delegates programming to a lead engineer might be personally responsible for quoting every job. That owner is a different decision-maker with different concerns — not toolpath efficiency but win rates, pricing margins and capacity utilization. By addressing both concerns, CloudNC is broadening its appeal from the technical niche of programming to the commercial heart of the manufacturing business.

Financial context and company trajectory

Notably, the funding announcement does not include a round letter, a valuation, or a figure for total capital raised. CloudNC closed a $45 million Series B in June 2022, a round backed by the European venture firm Atomico and Episode 1 Ventures, with Autodesk and Lockheed Martin joining as strategic partners. The company also received earlier support from Entrepreneur First, the London-based startup accelerator that helped launch the business in 2015.

Four years after that Series B, a $20 million raise led by a new investor and announced without a letter attached reads as a bridge to commercial scale rather than a step change in valuation, though nothing in the announcement confirms that interpretation one way or the other. It is a bet by investors that CloudNC has found a product-market fit and needs capital to replicate that success across more geographies and customer segments.

The involvement of Lockheed Martin is significant on multiple levels. The defense contractor is not only an investor but a named customer, alongside Major Tool and Machine, a US-based manufacturer of critical components for aerospace and defense. CloudNC is also working with Knox Systems to pursue FedRAMP certification for CAM Assist, a rigorous security authorization that would clear the software for use by US government agencies and defense contractors handling sensitive workloads. That certification would open the door to a sector that is rapidly increasing its demand for domestic manufacturing capacity.

Testing software on the shop floor

CloudNC is unusual among manufacturing software suppliers because it operates its own working precision machining factory alongside the software business. This arrangement means the product is tested against the same constraints its customers face every day — real machines, real materials, real deadlines — rather than against a simulation of those constraints. If the software cannot perform under the lights of the Chelmsford facility, it is not sent to customers.

That integration has been part of the company's pitch since Atomico and Episode 1 first backed it, and it remains a point of distinction in a category full of purely software-based vendors. The question is whether owning a factory is an advantage or a distraction. Supporters argue that it accelerates product development because every new feature is immediately validated in production. Critics suggest that running a facility with overheads, floor staff and capital equipment can split the attention of a small team and dilute focus on the core software mission.

The company's continued expansion suggests that, so far, the advantages have outweighed the costs. The factory has served not only as a development lab but as a proof point for customers, demonstrating that software created by a company that actually makes parts is more likely to understand the practical realities of the trade. It also gives CloudNC a source of revenue that is independent of software subscription cycles, providing a baseline that supports the riskier work of building new products.

The defense and onshoring angle

The funding round's connection to defense manufacturing is explicit. John Burbank, who founded Nimble Ventures, tied his firm's investment directly to the opportunity in onshoring. Automating CNC work, Burbank said, will enable "massive increases in onshoring of manufacturing and global production of mission-critical components."

Onshoring is the argument that makes this category fundable. Western governments are being asked to bring production of strategic goods — from aircraft parts to medical devices to semiconductor equipment — back to domestic soil at a moment when the skilled machinists who can program these machines are retiring faster than they are being replaced. The result is a severe shortage of the very talent that advanced manufacturing depends on.

Software that lets an existing team get more parts out of existing machines is the only answer available on the timescale governments are demanding. Building new factories and training new programmers takes years. Deploying an AI assistant that accelerates the work of current programmers can deliver results in months. This calculation is driving interest from defense primes and government agencies looking for ways to increase throughput without being constrained by labor availability.

CloudNC's focus on FedRAMP certification underscores that market opportunity. The certification process is demanding and requires significant investment in security infrastructure, auditing and compliance. But successful certification would give CloudNC a market advantage in a sector where trust and security are weighed as heavily as technical performance. It would also position the company as a strategic supplier to agencies and contractors that handle classified or sensitive programs.

The company's trajectory also reflects a broader trend in industrial software, where AI has moved from experimental to operational. CloudNC was founded in 2015, well before the current wave of generative AI hype, with the aim of automating a niche corner of computer-aided manufacturing. The founders saw that the software tools used to program CNC machines had changed little in decades and that the people qualified to use them were an aging and shrinking population. They built a solution that combined rule-based algorithms with machine learning and eventually produced a product that could be deployed in real factories without requiring a team of data scientists on site.

Today, CloudNC finds itself in the middle of an industrial policy argument that extends far beyond software efficiency. Governments in the United States and Europe are creating incentives for companies to reshore production of critical components, and they are doing so in an environment of tight labor markets and security concerns. The company's products speak directly to those concerns by enabling more output from fewer workers, while its defense relationships, including Lockheed Martin, anchor it to the most security-conscious segment of the manufacturing economy.

The $20 million round may not be transformational compared to the long-term capital needs of a company pursuing global expansion, defended by a network of alliance partners. But it is enough to advance the commercial rollout of CAM Assist, bring Quote Agent to market, and continue the grind toward certifications that are essential for the government market. For a company that has always tried to be both a software vendor and a manufacturer, the latest funding provides another runway to prove that the two sides reinforce each other.
