Google just gave Workspace a 24/7 AI agent that sends emails and books meetings while you sleep

At Google I/O 2026, the company unveiled a suite of AI-powered updates for its Workspace productivity suite, headlined by Gemini Spark — a 24/7 personal AI agent that goes beyond answering questions to taking direct actions on behalf of users. The announcement signals Google's aggressive push to embed autonomous agents into daily workflows, competing directly with Microsoft Copilot and other AI assistants.

Gemini Spark: Your Always-On Digital Assistant

Gemini Spark is designed to operate continuously, even while users sleep. It can send emails, create calendar events, and complete tasks across Gmail, Calendar, Docs, and Drive. Crucially, the agent asks for permission before executing high-stakes actions, and users can enable or disable it at any time. The agent runs on Gemini 3.5 and is built on Google's Antigravity architecture, allowing it to perform long-running background tasks efficiently. It will be available in preview for Workspace business customers within the Gemini app.

The introduction of a persistent AI agent marks a significant shift from traditional chatbots. While previous assistants required explicit prompts, Gemini Spark can anticipate needs — for example, rescheduling a meeting when a flight is delayed or automatically compiling weekly reports. Google emphasizes that the agent remains under human control, with transparent logging of all actions taken.

Voice Comes to Gmail, Docs, and Keep

Three of Google's most-used Workspace apps are getting voice-based features this summer. Gmail Live enables users to search their inbox using natural voice queries, such as "What's my flight's gate number?" and instantly retrieve answers from booking details. Docs Live acts as an intelligent assistant that organizes spoken rambles into structured documents, pulling context from Gmail, Drive, and the web with user permission. Keep receives a meaningful update: users can talk, and the app converts speech into organized notes and lists.

These conversational features are rolling out to Google AI Pro and Ultra subscribers in full, while Workspace business customers will get preview access. Google demonstrated a scenario where a user verbally drafts a project plan in Docs Live, and the system automatically inserts relevant data from recent emails and meeting notes. The underlying speech recognition leverages the same model powering Gemini Live on Pixel devices, optimized for productivity use cases.

Google Pics: Object-Aware Image Editing

Google Pics is a new image creation and editing tool built on the Gemini Nano Banana model. Its standout feature is object differentiation: users can select any element in an image and move, resize, or transform it without affecting the rest of the scene. The tool also supports in-photo text editing and translation, collaborative canvases, and integration with Slides and Drive. Google Pics is available today for Trusted Testers, with broader rollout to Google AI Pro and Ultra subscribers this summer. Business customers will receive preview access in the same timeframe.

The Nano Banana model is designed for lightweight on-device processing while maintaining high image quality. This allows Pics to handle complex edits like replacing a background or adjusting object colors without sending data to the cloud, addressing privacy concerns. Google also hinted at future API access for third-party developers.

AI Inbox Expands to More Users

AI Inbox, previously exclusive to Google AI Ultra subscribers, is now expanding to all Google AI Plus and Pro subscribers in the United States. The feature gains personalized draft replies, file access, and one-click task management. Users can read emails and instantly generate context-aware responses that pull information from their Drive files and calendar. The expansion reflects Google's strategy to make AI features more accessible across its subscription tiers, challenging Microsoft's similar push with Copilot for Microsoft 365.

All these announcements underscore Google's commitment to weaving AI deeply into Workspace. By offering a 24/7 agent, voice-first interactions, and advanced image editing, the company aims to redefine productivity for businesses and individual users alike. The previews and rollout timings suggest a phased approach, with businesses as early adopters.
