Zachary Levi doesn't apologize for political stance: 'I am still fighting for all of us'

In his new film "The Unbreakable Boy," Zachary Levi takes on the role of a father grappling with addiction, marital struggles, and the challenges of raising a child with a rare medical condition. The movie, which is based on the true story of Scott LeRette, offers a heartfelt look at family resilience. Levi, who is expecting his first child with partner Maggie Keating this spring, says he embraces the preparation for fatherhood with a mix of confidence and humility.

Levi, 44, shares that he feels ready to step into the role of a parent, reflecting on his love for children and his ability to see the child in every person. "I try to see the child in every single human being. I particularly love kids, because they're the best of us," he says. His on-screen journey in "The Unbreakable Boy" parallels his real-life experiences, as he explores themes of acceptance, forgiveness, and the human condition.

The Story Behind 'The Unbreakable Boy'

"The Unbreakable Boy" (in theaters Friday) follows Scott LeRette and his wife Teresa, who become parents to their first son Austin after just a few dates. Both Teresa and Austin suffer from osteogenesis imperfecta, commonly known as brittle bone disease. Later, Austin is also diagnosed with autism. The family's story is one of love and perseverance, navigating the complexities of a child with special needs while also dealing with their own personal struggles.

Levi explains that the film is about "radically accepting the life that you've been given. And when you can surrender to that, the love and the peace and the joy that can flow through you." For his character, this path to acceptance involved confronting his dependence on alcohol, a journey that resonated deeply with Levi's own life experiences. In 2017, Levi suffered what he describes as a complete mental breakdown, leading him to seek lifesaving therapy. He chronicled this difficult chapter in his 2022 memoir, "Radical Love." In one pivotal scene in the film, Levi channels those feelings of self-forgiveness and the struggle to release generational trauma.

"Everyone's doing the best they can with the tools and information they have at that time," Levi reflects, adding that the film's emotional core lies in the universal struggle to love oneself and one's family unconditionally.

Levi's Superhero Legacy and Uncertain Future

While Levi is best known for his role as the titular hero in the "Shazam!" movies, as well as his iconic TV role in "Chuck," the future of his superhero character remains uncertain. With the DC Universe undergoing a full reboot under director James Gunn, it is unclear if or how Billy Batson's adult alter ego will fit into the new cinematic landscape. Levi expresses contentment with his time as the character, calling it "dreamy" to have played a superhero with a kid's heart inside an adult's body. He says, "If I never get to play the role again, then I will be very content with my run. But reprising it would be super-fun."

The actor acknowledges that Hollywood is in a peculiar state following the pandemic and the strikes, and he is focusing on the projects that come his way, hoping to honor each role. His career has spanned from television to film, and he remains a recognizable figure in the entertainment industry.

Political Stance and Public Statements

Levi is also known for his outspoken political views, which have generated both support and controversy. In 2016, he urged his Twitter followers not to vote for either Donald Trump or Hillary Clinton, claiming neither cared about power. In 2024, he initially supported Robert F. Kennedy Jr.'s presidential campaign, and after Kennedy dropped out and endorsed Trump, Levi followed suit. He even appeared at a "Team Trump's Reclaim America Tour" rally in Michigan, where he moderated a conversation with Kennedy and former U.S. Rep. Tulsi Gabbard, both of whom now serve in Trump's Cabinet.

Despite warnings from his agents that his political alignment could lead to complications in his career, Levi says he has experienced no significant blowback. "I've tried to maintain at all times that while I may have a difference of opinion, I am still fighting for all of us," he explains. He emphasizes that he has no intention of dividing people further, noting that many individuals on opposite ends of the political spectrum ultimately want the same things but disagree on how to achieve them.

When asked if he would ever consider entering politics himself, Levi says many people have reached out to encourage him to run for office. However, he dismisses the idea for now, stating, "That's not on my bingo card, but I am open to whatever God's got in store for my life." He adds that it would take a divine sign, God blowing that door wide open, to push him into the political arena, which he describes as a whole other level of wackiness compared to Hollywood.

Career Highlights and Upcoming Projects

Beyond his film and television roles, Levi has built a diverse career. He starred in the action-comedy series "Chuck" from 2007 to 2012, gaining a devoted fan base. His transition to the big screen as the DC superhero Shazam in 2019 and its 2023 sequel "Shazam! Fury of the Gods" cemented his status as a leading man. He has also performed in stage productions, including "The Last Ship" on Broadway, showcasing his versatility as an entertainer.

Levi continues to engage with fans through social media and public appearances, often sharing insights into his personal life and beliefs. His memoir and now his role in "The Unbreakable Boy" reflect his commitment to vulnerability and authenticity. As he prepares for fatherhood in real life, he remains open to the unexpected turns his career and life may take.
