What to know about Liam Payne's only child, son Bear

Liam Payne was a devoted dad to his son, Bear Grey. The One Direction alum welcomed his first and only child with singer Cheryl on March 22, 2017. Payne had previously admitted that he "always wanted to be a young dad," but fatherhood at a young age didn't come easy.

"I had my son at a young age, and you think it will be a magical thing, that you're going to grow up one day into the person you're supposed to be," he told People in December 2020. "But it took a lot to find my footing."

Early life and birth

Payne and Cheryl welcomed their baby boy, who weighed 7 lbs., 9 oz., on March 22, 2017. The new parents announced his birth a few days later with a polaroid shot of Payne cradling his son, which they both posted on Instagram. "I'm incredibly happy to welcome our new baby boy into the world, it's a moment that I will never forget for the rest of my life and my favourite memory I have so far," Payne wrote. "I'm completely in awe of his incredible mother and how she has been the whole way through this, she's really made my dreams come true."

Interestingly, the couple did not immediately name their son. Before deciding on "Bear," Payne and Cheryl debated whether his moniker should be traditional. "It was like an internal battle," Payne recalled in May 2017. "I wanted a more traditional name and she wanted a name that was more unusual. And the reason she chose Bear in the end is because Bear is a name that when you leave a room, you won't forget. And I like that."

The name also came from an experience in the delivery room. Payne revealed on The Late Late Show with James Corden that "one of the midwives" called his son "Bear" because he made a growling sound like a bear due to fluid in his lungs. "He had this thing where if they don't have a good cry, they get fluid in their lungs, which is quite serious, so he was like going 'Grrrr,'" Payne said. "I had like 10 doctors come in the room, and in the end, the guy was just like, 'Dude, I'm not being funny. There's nothing wrong with him. He just likes to make a lot of noise.' And that's carried on ever since, so he just became Bear."

Fatherhood and co-parenting

After splitting from Cheryl in July 2018, Payne focused on spending quality time with his son while building a solo music career. "I see [Bear] two times a week, three times a week sometimes," he told People in March 2022. "And I make sure when I see him, he has 100 percent of my time. I make sure that I'm not on my phone or dicking around somewhere else."

"I like to give him those moments and it's important, he needs that in his life," he continued. "He needs his dad in his life."

Payne often spoke about how fatherhood changed him. In December 2020, he reflected on the challenges of being a young parent. "You think it will be a magical thing, that you're going to grow up one day into the person you're supposed to be, but it took a lot to find my footing." He also admitted that having Bear gave him a new perspective on life and motivated him to be a better person.

Bear's love for his dad's music

When it came to Payne's music, Bear was one of his biggest fans and supporters. In fact, Payne's son was one of the first people to hear his demos. "I played him demo tapes of 'Familiar' ages ago before it came out," Payne told People in July 2018. "Then when it came out, he was like, 'I remember this one!' He goes rigid and like shakes with excitement and wants to get as close to the speaker as possible."

He added, "For me, I love making great music for my fans. But when you make something that your son loves, it's the best thing ever. Whenever he cries or anything, I'm like, 'famili, famili' and he's like, 'Hey, it's this one again!' He loves it."

Bear also enjoyed other songs from his father's catalog, and Payne often played his music around the house. The bond they shared through music was a special part of their relationship.

Privacy and upbringing

Payne and Cheryl kept the majority of their son's upbringing out of the public eye. Even though they occasionally shared photos of Bear on Instagram with his back to the camera or only a hand in frame, they largely maintained his privacy online. During an appearance on the podcast Table Manners with Jessie and Lennie Ware in November 2018, Cheryl shared that she and Payne had always agreed on keeping their son off social media.

"I actually sent out letters [to the media] to say like please respect his privacy and stuff because … it's not his choice and it's not up to me to make that decision, I don't feel, and I want him to have a childhood like everybody else like I did," she said.

Payne echoed this sentiment on the podcast The Diary of a CEO with Stephen Barlett in June 2021. "Obviously, we protected his identity to start off with, and that's not being pretentious or anything other than the fact that I want to give him a chance to be Bear first before he has to be, 'oh, your mom and dad are so and so' you know," he explained. "And I made my choice to be where I was at 14/15, so I figure he can make his own choice then too."

In April 2026, Cheryl shared rare photos and videos on Instagram of her and Bear enjoying a trip to Walt Disney World, offering a glimpse into their happy moments.

Bear's resemblance to his father

While neither Payne nor Cheryl shared photos of their son's face publicly, the former One Direction member told People in December 2020 that his then-3-year-old son closely resembled him. "He looks exactly like me, which is very strange," he said. "When family members see baby pictures of me now, they say, 'Oh wow, Bear looks really great there!'"

Payne and his son also shared a similar fashion sense. In June 2017, the singer posted a photo on Instagram of him and Bear wearing a matching pair of black-and-white Yeezys with the caption: "Like father like son."

Liam Payne's death and Bear as sole beneficiary

More than seven years after welcoming his son, Payne died on Oct. 16, 2024, after he fell from a hotel balcony in Argentina. The news shocked the world and left his family in deep grief. Cheryl and attorney Richard Mark Bray were subsequently named administrators of Payne's $29 million estate. In June 2026, Bear became the sole beneficiary of his father's estate. A majority of the money will be held in a trust until Bear turns 18.

Shortly after Payne's death, Cheryl posted a picture of him and Bear on her Instagram, reminding fans that Payne was more than just a pop star. "As I try to navigate this earth shattering event, and work through my own grief at this indescribably painful time, I'd like to kindly remind everyone that we have lost a human being," she wrote. "Liam was not only a pop star and celebrity, he was a son, a brother, an uncle, a dear friend and a father to our 7 year old son. A son that now has to face the reality of never seeing his father again."

Bear, now age 7 at the time of his father's passing, continues to be raised by his mother Cheryl, who has maintained a relatively low profile. The trust set up for Bear ensures that he will be financially secure as he grows up. The legacy of Liam Payne lives on through his music and his beloved son.

As Bear grows older, he may choose to step into the spotlight or continue to live a private life, but for now, his parents' wishes for him to have a normal childhood are being honored. The world remembers Liam Payne not only as a pop star but as a devoted father who cherished every moment with his son.
