iOS 27 Makes the Shortcuts App Much Less Intimidating

The Shortcuts app has long been a powerful but intimidating tool for iPhone users, offering deep system integration and automation capabilities that often required technical knowledge to master. With iOS 27, Apple has taken a significant step to change that perception. The update introduces a natural language interface powered by Apple Intelligence, allowing users to create complex shortcuts simply by describing what they want in plain English. This move aims to democratize automation, making it accessible to everyone from casual users to power users.

Describe a Shortcut

When you tap the New Shortcut button in the iOS 27 Shortcuts app, instead of a blank canvas with hundreds of actions, you are greeted by the Describe a Shortcut interface. This is a text box that asks you what you want your shortcut to do. You can type or dictate a request using natural language, such as "Each evening, set tomorrow's alarm based on my first Calendar event, turn on Sleep Focus, and dim the bedroom lights." Apple Intelligence then interprets the request, selects the appropriate actions, creates the necessary automations, and presents a completed shortcut. The system can handle single-step requests or complex sequences involving multiple parameters and conditions.

The beauty of this approach is that it removes the learning curve. Users no longer need to understand the difference between actions, triggers, or variables. They can simply express their intent and let the AI do the work. Examples include generating a morning briefing with the day's first meeting, weather, and Reminders; automating porch lights when a food delivery notification arrives; texting an ETA and starting a podcast upon leaving work; and even summarizing tech news daily. The system can also trigger actions based on time, location, app usage, notifications, or system events like screenshots.

Add Refinements

After the initial shortcut is generated, the app displays each action step. If the result is satisfactory, you can tap the play button to test it and it will be saved. However, if you want to tweak the behavior, Apple Intelligence offers a "Describe a change" interface. You can type adjustments like "Add a reminder to send the ETA only if I'm driving" or "Also turn on Low Power Mode." The system iterates, allowing multiple rounds of refinement until you achieve exactly what you envisioned. This iterative process makes customization effortless, even for those who have no prior experience with automation.

Edit Manually

Despite the AI's capabilities, it's not perfect. For complex modifications or unsupported nuances, users can tap into the manual editing interface familiar from previous versions of Shortcuts. This provides full control over every aspect of the shortcut, including adding conditional logic, variables, and third-party app integrations. The manual editor has also been refreshed to better integrate with AI-generated shortcuts, so you can switch between natural language and visual editing at any point. This hybrid approach ensures that power users are not left behind, while newcomers have a safety net for advanced scenarios.

New Automation Triggers

iOS 27 introduces several new automation triggers that greatly expand what shortcuts can respond to:

  • When a notification is received – Ideal for automating responses to specific app alerts.
  • When a screenshot is captured – Useful for logging screenshots or extracting text via OCR.
  • When a keyboard is connected – Perfect for switching to a productivity mode or changing display settings.
  • When an Apple Watch workout starts – Triggers fitness-related tasks like logging calories or sending status updates.

These triggers join existing ones like time of day, location, app launch, and Wi-Fi connection, making Shortcuts one of the most versatile automation platforms on mobile devices.

New Actions

The action library has also received a significant update with many new capabilities:

  • Automate a recording in Notes – Start and stop audio recordings directly via shortcuts.
  • Send messages to a group conversation – Streamline group communication.
  • Updated Get What's On Screen option – Retrieves contextual information from the display, such as text, titles, or links, enabling advanced content processing.
  • Choose an item from a list – Present a dynamic list to the user for selection.
  • Delete conversations or messages in Messages – Manage clutter automatically.
  • Mark as read in Messages – Clear unread badges without manual intervention.
  • Search in Messages – Find specific messages programmatically.
  • Open Messages inbox – Direct access to the main message list.
  • Send Tapback – React to messages with a Tapback icon without opening the app.
  • Auto Enhance Photo – Apply AI-based improvements to images.
  • Delete albums and photos – Manage photo library organization.
  • Favorite photos – Mark favorites in bulk.
  • Hide photos – Conceal photos from the main view.
  • Open photo – Launch a specific photo or album.
  • Create Group in Reminders – Organize tasks by group.
  • Create Section in Reminders – Add sections within lists.
  • Delete groups, lists, and sections in Reminders – Remove outdated structures.
  • Edit list in Reminders – Rename, color, or change list settings.
  • Toggle Hearing Aid Mute – Control audio accessories.
  • Toggle Vehicle Motion Cues – Reduce motion sickness while in a vehicle.

These actions significantly enhance Shortcuts' ability to interact with core iOS apps, reducing the need for manual steps in daily routines.

Improved Apple Intelligence Models

Apple Intelligence in iOS 27 leverages three tiers of models: on-device, Cloud, and Cloud Pro. The on-device model handles simple tasks privately, while Cloud and Cloud Pro models can offload more complex processing to Apple servers. Crucially, Cloud Pro has access to the web, enabling shortcuts that require up-to-date information. For example, a shortcut that "shows today's top tech news" can fetch and summarize web content in real time. This broad world knowledge makes AI-generated shortcuts far more powerful and contextually aware than before.

Data Storage

Shortcuts can now store and update data persistently. This allows actions like maintaining a running tally, adding items to a shopping list, or tracking scores across sessions. The data lives in iCloud and syncs across devices, enabling continuity in automations that rely on state.

Automation Updates

In iOS 27, the Automation tab has been merged into the main Shortcuts interface. Instead of a separate section, automation triggers are now just another type of action. This simplifies the workflow: you create a shortcut, add a trigger as the first action, and you're done. The change reduces confusion and makes it easier to understand that automations are just shortcuts that run automatically.

Cross-Platform Support

The Describe a Shortcut feature is available across Apple's ecosystem: iOS 27, iPadOS 27, and macOS Golden Gate. This consistency ensures that users can create shortcuts on their iPhone and have them work on their iPad or Mac seamlessly. Apple continues to unify its software platforms, and Shortcuts is a prime example of that synergy.

Requirements

The Apple Intelligence features in Shortcuts require a device capable of running Apple Intelligence. This includes the iPhone 15 Pro and later, iPads with an M-series chip or the iPad mini with A17 Pro, and Macs with Apple silicon. The feature supports a wide range of languages: English, Danish, Dutch, French, German, Italian, Norwegian, Portuguese, Spanish, Swedish, Turkish, Vietnamese, Chinese (simplified and traditional), Japanese, and Korean. This broad language support ensures that users around the world can benefit from natural language automation.

iOS 27's Shortcuts update marks a turning point. By lowering the barrier to entry, Apple is encouraging more users to explore automation, potentially saving time and reducing repetitive tasks. With the addition of powerful new triggers, actions, and AI integration, Shortcuts becomes not just a tool for tech enthusiasts but a practical assistant for everyone. As Apple continues to refine its AI models and expand the action library, the future of personal automation looks brighter than ever.
